You're Not Lost
i promise. ok i don't really know. but here are some things i think about being lost that might change your mind.
WHAT IF….
You’re not lost.
I know. Plot twist.
What if instead of being a lost-ie you’re a sprouting little flower. A phone charging it’s battery. A cigarette almost sucked out of it’s last puff. Another metaphor for on-the-way or on-the-way-out. Either way, you’re HERE! No like really, you are HERE. And I’m so glad you are.
OK HERE IS MY THEORY
You’re not lost.
You don’t believe me. You’re skeptical. You have no idea what you want to do with your life or what kind of relationship you want. A part of you desires a monogamous partnership and another part of you wants to be an exploratory polyamorous lover to a couple. You think you want a career but you also see yourself living off of coconuts and beans in South America. You’re half heathen half angel. A dichotomy of altruism and super selfishness. Who you are is a mystery because you refuse to define it—at the same time you know exactly who you are and refuse to abandon it.
You are, lost.
But you’re not.
Ok gremlins. Here it is. The cold hard truth.
In order to truly appreciate this cold hard truth, I must highly recommend listening to this song while reading what you’re about to read.
THE SONG:
Ok. Are you listening?
You will feel lost in life.
You’ll say you don’t know what you want. That you don’t know who you are. You’ll say this with some veil of shame, as if it’s a bad thing.
But most people are lost.
Most people have no idea what they’re doing. For the most part, people are making it up as they go.
As soon as you think you have a grip on life, it will change in ways you could have never predicted.
The older you get, the more you’ll realize it’s fruitless to hold on to what you think life should be or how it will go, because you’ll know this only leads to disappointment or feeling like a failure.
You’ll stop berating yourself for feeling lost and cherish your outlook for choosing curiosity.
You’ll try new things, again, and wonder what this life thing is all about.
You’ll have deep chats at bars and read philosophy in parks.
You’ll feel more comfortable with your life.
You’ll say you know what you want and that you finally know who you are. you’ll say this with some veil of hope—as if nothing is bad or good, as if you’ve finally realized that “lost” is not a place to run from, but the place between what’s known and unknown.
That being lost is a sign that you were brave, and you’re on your way to something new.
You’ll realize you weren’t lost at all: you were living.
And that’s my theory :)
